Obituary for Carol Jean Hewer
Carol Jean Hewer, age 78, passed away September 30, 2017 at Residence. Carol Jean Hewer was born January 21, 1939 in Eureka Sprinigs, Arkansas to Albert Parker and Mildred Branham (Mildred Branham).
Carol Jean Hewer, professor emeritus Bakersfield College, died at her home in
Ridgecrest, California, while under Hospice care on Spetember 30, 2017 at the
age of 78. She was born in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, the daughter of Albert and
Mildred Parker in 1939. She spent her early years in Eureka Springs graduating
from Eureka Springs High School as class valedictorian in 1957. She entered the
University of Arkansas, Fayetteville and graduated in the College of Arts and
Sciences with a degree in English literature in 1960 with highest honors. She
was a life-long member of Phi Beta Kappa. She achieved her master's degree at
that institution in 1962. After one year teaching English at Eureka Springs High
in 1962-1963, she joined the faculty at Bakersfield College, Bakersfield, CA. In
1968 she transferred to the Bakersfield College Desert Campus now Cerra Coso
College Ridgecrest, CA. That same year she met Gary Hewer; they were married
October 1969 in Bakersfield, CA. She retired from Cerro Cosco College in 2001
after 38 years.
She was predeceased by her parents and her sister Helen Maxwell and her
first husband James Hollis Ward.
She is survvied by her husband Gary, daughter Elizabeth Gossett, son-inlaw
Keola Gossett, grandson Dante Gossett, nephew Daryl Maxwell as well as
numerous Parker relatives.
The family wishes to thank the Hospice Care caregivers and all our friends
who sent cards, text messages and spent comfort time with her during her last
days.
A 11 AM memorial service is planned for October 21 at the Ridgecrest
Presbyterian Church for family and friends.
