Dorothy Marion Hasting

July 16, 1924 — July 29, 2023

Dorothy Hasting was born July 16, 1924 in Philadelphia, PA to Austin Joseph Ounan and Dorothy Marion Ounan.  She passed away on July 29, 2023 with loved ones by her side, just 13 days after celebrating her 99th birthday.

Dorothy's father died when she was 13 years old.  She moved between homes of family members as she completed her schooling.

During WWII she attended Temple University and received special training on the production of radars.  She went to work at the Philco Radio Plant inspecting radars as they came off the production line.  Following the war, she worked at various office jobs.  In the early 1950's she met her future husband, Roy Hasting, SSgt USMC.  When he got orders to go to Korea, he told her "I'm going to marry you when I get back".  And they did - June 27, 1953.

Over the years they had five children and were assigned to many duty stations.  Roy retired from military service in 1965 and the family headed west, ending up in California then finally in Ridgecrest in October 1967.

Dorothy spent countless hours running the kids around and volunteering with many fund raisers. Fund raisers included selling ice cream at schools, bottle drives and paper drives. For many years she also volunteered to serve meals to senior citizens when the program was held at the Knights of Columbus Hall,  and making items in the founding years of the St. Ann Country Holiday Bazaar.

Dorothy was a devout Catholic and an active member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Ridgecrest.  She was a 20+ year member of the Altar Society and volunteered her time to wash and iron altar linens, polish candelabras, clean the rectory, and decorate the church and chapel.  She truly had a servant's heart.

Dorothy was a very kind woman with a wonderful sense of humor.  You would never hear her speak ill of anyone.  She was always ready with a joke or amusing story.  She had a fantastic memory and could easily recall jokes and stories she had heard.  A couple of her doctors would want a joke from her right at the beginning of her appointments.  She was an avid crossword puzzler which kept her mind sharp.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Roy in 1992, her parents, brothers John Ounan and George Ounan and half-sister Anne Nelesen.

She is survived by her children and their spouses Stephen (Barbara) Hasting, Susan (Donald) Connell, Michael (Susan) Hasting, Linda (Don) Arness and Gale (Henry) Lebsock.  She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
