Jack Elwin Godett passed away June 19 at his home in Ridgecrest at the age of 94. Jack was born February 15, 1931 to John and Francis Godett in Los Angeles, California. He moved with his family to China Lake in 1945 and graduated from Burroughs High School in 1949. After graduation from high school Jack worked at the Godett and Son gas station his father purchased in Eagle Rock, California.
In 1951 he enlisted in the army and was trained as a surveyor. He was then shipped off to Korea where he surveyed and mapped roads. With his survey crew and a crew from North Korea he surveyed the site of the Korean peace talks. After his time in Korea he was transferred to remote areas of Alaska to survey portions of that state.
In 1953 Jack left the army and got a job at the Naval Ordnance Test Station, China Lake, as a surveyor in the Range Department. He went on to work with Bowen high speed cameras on the China Lake ranges. He retired from the civil service in 1989 and took a position with Honeywell working on its 120mm test program at China Lake where he again worked with high speed cameras. He retired from Honeywell in 1999.
Jack married Joy Griffith of Burbank California in 1955 and moved her to China Lake. He was active in the VFW where he was the ship's treasurer for many years. He was also active with scouting and served as Cubmaster and Scoutmaster while his boys were active in scouting. Jack and Joy enjoyed camping in the couple's travel trailer with many trips including ones to Alaska and Maine. He also enjoyed gardening and cross stitching.
Jack was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Joy, in April of this year. He is survived by his son Roger and his wife Mary of Ridgecrest; son Bart and his wife Coco of Big Pine; 7 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.
