John Merrill Johnson Jr

September 12, 1931 — November 20, 2024

John Merrill Johnson Jr. (Jay to his family and friends) was born on September 12, 1931, in Waukegan, Illinois. He passed from this life at the age of 93 on November 20, 2024, in Ridgecrest, California. He had made his home in the Indian Wells Valley since 1954.

John received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Northwestern University before relocating to California. He later earned his M.S. degree from UCLA. John and his wife, Virginia, moved from Illinois to California where he began working at the base (NOTS then NWC) at China Lake.

He worked as an electrical/electronic engineer on the base for more than 31 years. After retiring from Civil Service, he worked at Texas Instruments as a base contractor for more than another 5 years.

John was active in his church as a lay reader, acolyte trainer, Vestry member and more. He was also active in the local engineering community. Throughout his life, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as the great outdoors. In later years, he found joy in being part of a local bowling league.


John was predeceased by his wife of nearly 54 years, Virginia. He is survived by his brother, Edward, sister-in-law, La Verne, daughter, Stacie Tibbetts and sons Michael and James, as well as by daughters-in-law Janet and Marianne, two grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.


Memorial service is Tuesday December 17, 2024 at 1PM at the Immanuel Baptist Ministry Center. All are welcome.
