Mattie was born in Dallas Texas on September 19,1928. Mattie was the youngest of four children born to parents Wendell and Mattie Hopkins.

Mattie was married to William Eldgin Bass (Sam) on January 17,1945 after a two-week courtship. They were married for 60 1/2 years.

Mattie worked as a home maker for her entire life. She enjoyed fishing, reading, sewing, gardening and keno.  But what Mattie loved most of all was her husband Sam, their son and three daughters. As her family expanded, so did her love for her new sons-in law and daughters-in-law.  Then came the grandchildren, great grandchildren and all the nieces and nephews.  One thing that Mattie always wanted to experience was to eat a meal at an outdoor café.  Well in 2007 her wish came true in Switzerland. In addition to the Café, Mattie got to eat Black Forest Cake in the Black Forest and she got to drink swiss hot chocolate in the Swiss Alps.

Mattie is survived by son Larry Bass (Ana) Brazil, daughters Trudy Hopper (Daniel) Tennessee, Althea McGuire (Charles) California City, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces/nephews and other family and friends.

Mattie is preceded in death by her parents Wendell and Mattie Hopkins Bakersfield, CA, husband William Eldgin Bass (Sam) California City, CA, daughter Judy Beth Smith California City, CA, Sisters Lazelle, Lancaster, CA, Maxine Denver CO, and her brother Bobby.
