Mertie Manda Smith, née Valentine, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and dedicated civil service employee, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026, in Ridgecrest, California. Born on January 25, 1924, in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, Mertie lived an inspiring life marked by steadfast commitment, service, and a deep devotion to family.
Mertie proudly served her country during World War II as a member of the United States Navy WAVES, demonstrating courage and resilience overseas. Following her military service, she pursued her education with determination, earning an Associate of Arts degree in Business Administration from Cerro Coso Community College. This foundation led to a distinguished 28-year career as a civil service employee at the Naval Weapons Center in China Lake, where she worked diligently as a secretary, contributing significantly to the operations and success of the center.
Her marriage to Melvin W. Smith on December 12, 1945, was a cornerstone of her life until his passing, and together they raised a family that became central to her enduring legacy. Mertie was a devoted mother to her children: Arthur E. Smith, age 79, and Jane E. Smith, age 78, who survive her. She also mourned the loss of her son John E. Smith, who passed away at the age of 62, and her daughter Ruth Ann (Smith) O'Neil, who left this life at age 73.
Mertie's later years were enriched by her vibrant family life, surrounded by eleven loving grandchildren and twenty-nine great-grandchildren, including Lisa (O'Neil) Katzenstein, Erin (O'Neil) Kelly, Rory O'Neil, Katie (O'Neil) Wadley, Joanna (O'Neil) Rock, Curtis Smith, Grant Smith, Eric Smith, Monte Smith, Riley Smith, and Darren Smith. Her passion for family gatherings, shared stories, and nurturing each generation was a testament to her warm and generous spirit.
Beyond her family, Mertie embraced a variety of hobbies and interests that brought joy and fulfillment to her days. She was an avid traveler across North America, enjoyed playing golf and bingo, and delighted in knitting. Occasionally, she made special trips to Las Vegas to care for slot and keno machines, a unique and spirited engagement reflecting her lively nature.
A graveside service honoring the life of Mertie Manda Smith will be held on June 10, 2026, beginning at 10:00 a.m., at Desert Memorial Park, located at 801 San Bernardino Boulevard in Ridgecrest, California. This service will provide a moment for family and friends to gather and celebrate the remarkable journey of a woman whose contributions to her country, community, and family have left an indelible mark.
Mertie’s life story is one of dedication, perseverance, and heartfelt connection. Her legacy endures in the memories she crafted and the love she so generously shared. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
