On December 20, 2024, after a battle with cancer, Michael peacefully left us to meet his wife at the gates of paradise. He was surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and friends, in his last days.
Michael was born in Oceanside, California on May 16th, 1949, to June Scott and Fred Scurlock. He grew up there until moving to Ridgecrest at age eight. He graduated from Burroughs in 1967, from APU in 1975, and then promptly married his love, Carolyn Calderwood. Several father figures entered his life, including Robert Cash and most notably, Allyn Berryman. Michael worked in Ridgecrest, as a dedicated civil servant, for over 30 years. He also spent some years in Fairfax, Virginia, when his career took him to the Pentagon.
After retiring, he immersed himself in volunteering, dedicating his time to active-duty military, veterans, first responders, and the community. His longtime interest in HAM Radio developed the skill to support the state of California Office of Emergency Services and FEMA with communication in times of crisis, as well as during the horse races. His love of motorcycles enriched his life and led him to support and ride in Run for the Wall missions. He traversed the U.S., on Harley, multiple times to support Vietnam veterans. He was an active member of the American Legion Riders, post 684, and felt honored to ride Patriot Guard, including as a Ride Captain, for many funeral services. It is in these realms of radios and hogs that many may know him as "Papa Mike".
Michael was constantly combining his patriotism and sense of community. He was very involved in the Parade of 1000 Flags, instrumental in Wreaths Across America, the Banner Program, and brought several traveling memorials to the Kerr McGee Center. Along with his wife, Carolyn, he founded a nonprofit called Operation Family Fund, with a mission to provide funds and services to injured veterans and their families. These are just some of his endeavors and shortly before falling ill, Michael was presented with the key to the city.
Michael leaves behind his four children, four grandchildren, his brother, five nieces, and so many friends and extended family.
There will be a visitation at the Holland and Lyons chapel on January 31st from 4-7pm. On February 1st there will be a funeral at Desert Christian Center at 10am, followed by a burial service at Desert Memorial Park.
