Sally's family requested the following be added.
Aunt Sally
Aunt Sally was a truly gentle soul. She never wanted to hurt anyone.
Sally grew up in "El Rancho So Broko" on Sunset Street here in Ridgecrest. Although she spent a few years in other parts of California, she spent 50 plus years of her life in that home. She treasured it. She treasured us.
Family was everything to her. She treasured the opportunities she enjoyed with family members through phone calls, internet and pictures. And Sally was ALWAYS there. She taught us. She was always teaching us. She had so many bits of information stashed in her brain . . . I'm not even sure where she stored it all. If we had a question, Sally almost always had an answer. She could be whimsical and wise, practical and persistent. I'm not sure any of us realized what a vital connection she had with us until she was gone.
Her gift of tending Gma Walker all those years so that Gma could stay in the home that Gpa built is a gift/service that we all treasure. I never once heard Sally complain. She just quietly went about doing whatever Gma needed . . . often with a smile . . . even when it didn't make sense, or just because Gma asked. I'm sure it was a great sacrifice for her. It can't have been easy. Thank you Aunt Sally. She was also self-less in helping Jimmy and Mom. This service also came with it's challenges; but again, she NEVER complained. I might say to her something like, "Sally, that must have been hard for you?" And she would respond with a gentle "EH" and brush it off with no comment. A gentle soul indeed.
Sally and Gma worked on our family Genealogy together. If it wasn't a passion before Sally moved from the Bay Area to live with Gma it certainly became her passion when she got here. We have ancestors that hail back to the Mayflower and we are related to royalty and several United States Presidents. How fortunate we all are to have this information. Because of Gma Walker and Sally's hard work we know who we are and where we came from.
Sally loved Ridgecrest. It's her favorite place to live. She was passionate about history of any kind, but especially Ridgecrest History. Her father and his brothers ran the Ice Plant on Ridgecrest Boulevard for many years. She gave the Maturango Museum over 10 pages of her memories of Ridgecrest History along with pictures.
I love how Sally would share with me whimsical things and fun ideas. She'd shine when listening to the music from her High School days. Sally loved music of all Genre's. On Friday she told me about Aba Daba Honeymoon and It's in the book (Gma's Lye Soap). Look them up . . . They're a hoot. We laughed until we cried. It was a good hearty laugh. I'm grateful for the memory.
I am forever grateful that Sally is my Aunt. She had a hard life, but didn't let that make her hard. I already miss her hugs and special warm smile and quiet ways.
Yup. Sally truly was a gentle soul.
