We remember Steve as a man who loved family and the woman with whom he made a life for 50 years, Francine Wersan.
Although he was not raised in a religious home, Judaism, Zionism, Israel, and Jewish community became important to him as he raised his family. He took the initiative to study Hebrew and Yiddish on his own.
We cannot remember him without recalling his "bad" puns and song parodies! He was, as well, a poet and lover of words and reading, self-publishing a collection of his poetry called Smooth Stones on the Bottom. He was enthusiastic about jazz and folk music, puppetry (more bad puns and song parodies), drama, and little children.
And he loved to play Scrabble which he did almost every day with Fran during their years in Ridgecrest. He was a master of strategy. Only a few weeks before his death, he beat his daughter, Sarah, by 7 points in a game.
It is remarkable that a man, trained as a civil engineer and mathematician -- someone who spent his career in software engineering -- appreciated so much the whimsical side of life.
