Steven Victor Cornett

March 15, 1957 — July 7, 2023

Steven Victor Cornett passed away at his home in Ridgecrest on Friday, July 7 2023 due to
complications of Multiple Sclerosis.
Steve was born in Ridgecrest on March 15 1957 to Nathaniel and Helen Cornett. He was a
member of the Burroughs Class of '75, where he played Varsity football his freshman through
senior years. Following high school he married Debbie Crow with whom he was blessed with 5
children, followed by 11 grandchildren. Before early retirement, Steve worked as a Procurement
Specialist for China Lake Naval Weapons Center.
Growing up, Steve was actively involved in motor sports. As a young boy he raced quarter
midgets with his brother, John, and competitively raced motocross through his teens. He later
enjoyed custom building his Honda Gold Wing with his brother, Tom, and touring the country
riding together. Some of his kids' and older grandkids' fondest memories of him take place on
the backseat of his motorcycle. Horses were another of Steve's passions, especially his horse
Black Magic. He loved riding and helping others care for their horses. He was actively involved
with the Old West Mounted Lawmen's Association and participated in various events and
reenactments. He was awarded lifetime membership because of his contributions.
Steve's greatest source of pride was his children and grandchildren and his dog, Lakota. He used
to love spending the Fall season in Utah with all of them; tail-gaiting with his son, Utah State
football games, drives in the mountains, having his daughters spoil him with their cooking, and
especially watching his grandkids in their various activities. His grandkids provided nonstop
amusement and joy for him. His dog Lakota never left his side, nor he his. After Steve's
diagnosis with MS and Lakota's loss of eyesight, the two lived life to serve each other. He was
devastated to lose Lakota last February. Steve also enjoyed lunches with his brother, Brian, and
the love and support he received from his nieces and nephews. A special thanks goes to Dr.
Trisha for the tremendous support she was to him in his last years. Also thanks to Uncle Brian
and his family for always looking out for him. We will all remember Steve for his big heart and
his big laugh!
Steve is survived by his 5 children; Jennifer (David) Jeppesen, Jamie (Tony) Backus, Kevin
(Melanie) Cornett, Stephanie Cornett, and Megan (Richard) Holland; Grandchildren; Kaden
(Baylee), Riley, Chase, Braeda (Tanner), Elijah, Lily, Chloe, Grayson, Hadley, Gavin and Jada;
all of Utah. He is also survived by brothers; John (Katrina) Cornett of Bonners Ferry, ID and
Brian Cornett of Ridgecrest, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in
death by father, Nathaniel Cornett; mother, Helen Harwell Cornett; sister, Bonnie Cornett;
brothers, Tom Ogan & Bob Ogan; and his beloved dog, Lakota.

Cremation services are being handled by Holland and Lyons Mortuary. At Steve's request, there
